Reflections is the new body of work by painter Jon Ching. Embracing the word “reflection” as a homonym, this series of paintings can be seen as two in one. There are works that express his thoughts and feelings on current American society and works that investigate symmetries in the natural world. Continuing with his surreal, wildlife compositions, his oil paintings are meticulously rendered, abundant and full of metaphor with subtle irony while paying homage the magnificence of nature.

Please come to the opening reception. This is the only opportunity to view the work in this capacity and to speak with Jon in person. Be sure to come early as Doc’s Lab transforms back into a venue later that evening.

Jon Ching is a San Francisco painter whose work focuses mainly on wildlife, specifically birds. Their diversity of skills, infinite combination of colors, patterns and details and the perfection of their evolution intrigues Jon and draws him to study their nature. In his current body of work, along with birds, Jon invites other creatures and habitats into his compositions. Deeply intrigued by symbiosis, both as a natural phenomenon and as a metaphor, Jon looks at the balance and relationship of organisms in the human world and depicts scenes of reflection. His paintings present his vision of the ebb and flow of culture and the interaction of people in San Francisco at a time of transition and growth through surreal metaphorical themes. His photorealistic graphite drawings offers an intimate meditation on the beauty that nature can achieve when it is in balance. Jon is a self-trained artist originally from Kaneohe, Hawaii and currently lives and works in the Inner Richmond of San Francisco.
